Pre-menstrual Syndrome and Conventional Treatments

As we mentioned in previous article, Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. The occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have more than doubled over the past 50 years due to the acceptance of it as a medical condition that is caused by unhealthy diet with high in saturated food. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how to treat PMS with conventional treatments.

1. The pill
The pill contains synthetic estrogen and progesterone hormone, it's main objective is to prevent ovulation and make the mucus in the cervix hostile to sperm if ovulation occurs, thereby, it helps to reduce syndrome for women with PMS.

2.GrNH (gonadotrophin-releasing hormone
GrNH is medication used to treatment PMS to induce the women reproductive system into temporary menopause state. GrNH contains buserelin and goserelin, the synthetic hormone stop the pituitary gland from releasing follicle-stimulating hormone
(FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), thereby prevent ovulation completely.

3. Diuretics
Diuretic treatments promote the kidney function in releasing urine by reducing the amount of sodium and fluid taken by blood. It is the medication used in treating symptoms of weigh gain and water retention for women with PMS.

4. Estrogen replacement therapy
By increase intake estrogen in to the body, it helps to control the menstrual cycle by suppressing the ovulation, thereby reducing symptoms for women with pre menstrual syndrome.

5.Progesterone therapy
Since PMS occurs in the second half of the ovulation, many researchers believe deficiency may be the cause for pre menstrual syndrome and progesterone hormone therapy may help to relieve the syndrome. Progesterone is a very controversy subject with argument raging for and against it.

6. Progestogens
Progentogens are synthetic hormone, it helps to thicken the mucus in the cervix thereby preventing sperm to enter. The main objective of progestogens is to prevent ovulation resulting in lessening the symptoms of PMS.

7. Anti depression
Anti depression contains benzodiazeoines and alprazolam, it helps to reduce symptoms of psychological effects in women with PMS.
